Six years ago, my family packed up our life and mo

Six years ago, my family packed up our life and moved to Idaho from Southern California.

At the time, I don’t think I fully understood how much that move would reshape not only where we lived, but also how I saw myself professionally.

Since then, my title in education has changed multiple times.

Teacher.
Coach.
State-level support.
Author.
Professional learning.
Curriculum and systems work.
Learning experience and readiness.

And somewhere along the way, I realized something important:

Even as the roles changed, the heart of the work really didn’t.

I still care deeply about:
how students learn,
how teachers are supported,
how instructional decisions are made,
and how schools create clarity instead of overwhelm.

I think sometimes in education we put so much focus on titles and roles that we forget growth often looks more like evolution than reinvention.

Over the last six years, I’ve learned that you can step into new spaces professionally without losing the parts of yourself that first brought you into education.

As another school year wraps up, I’ve been reflecting on how much can change in six years and how important it is to recognize growth while still staying connected to your purpose.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the phrase “

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the phrase “implement with fidelity” and how often it gets interpreted as compliance instead of intentional instruction.

Years ago, I remember realizing my students needed more time with a math concept before moving on. Formative assessment data made it clear they weren’t ready yet.

But slowing down meant falling behind the pacing guide and out of alignment with my team.

What stuck with me most wasn’t disagreement about instruction. It was the fear surrounding it. Fear of getting in trouble. Fear of being seen as off pace. Fear of not implementing “with fidelity.”

And honestly, that’s the problem with the language sometimes.

When fidelity becomes rooted in fear, compliance becomes the goal instead of learning.

Teachers start worrying more about staying on pace than responding to evidence in front of them.

Intentional instruction should require thinking. Adjusting. Responding. Reteaching when needed. Staying anchored to outcomes while making professional decisions in the moment.

That’s not a lack of integrity.

That IS instructional integrity.

They’re navigating initiative overload, constant demands, limited time, and systems that are often competing instead of aligned.

School improvement conversations matter, but so does the way we support the people doing the work every day.

When schools create clarity, alignment, practical support, and space for instructional growth, teachers are much more likely to sustain meaningful change.

✔️ Let them reflect on their own progress
✔️ Highlight their growth before Friday’s done

Anchor charts aren’t just cute classroom decor. They’re one of the most powerful tools for making learning stick.

When we use anchor charts intentionally, they do three big things:
✨ make learning goals visible
✨ clarify success criteria
✨ give students a tool they can actually use while they’re learning

When students can SEE what they’re learning and HOW to be successful, everything changes. They’re more focused, more confident, and way more independent.

Instead of keeping learning in your head (or buried in a lesson plan), anchor charts bring it to life right in front of students.

✔️ They document the goal
✔️ They break down the steps to success
✔️ They evolve as students learn
✔️ They capture student thinking along the way

That’s the shift → from “teacher tool” to “student resource.”

And the best part? They don’t have to be perfect.

Keep them simple.
Use student-friendly language.
Add visuals.
Build them WITH your students.
Actually use them during instruction (not just hang them up 👀).

Because when anchor charts are used well, they become a living, breathing part of your classroom. Not just something on the wall.

If your students aren’t using your anchor charts, it might be time to rethink how they’re being used. 💡
