Here are 5 examples of high impact strategies:

1️⃣Direct Instruction
An instructional strategy that is explicit. Teachers model the skill and give students opportunities to practice in a gradual release format.

2️⃣Success Criteria
Success criteria provide students with an opportunity to assess their own learning. It can look like “I can” statements, rubrics, and are often co-constructed with students.

3️⃣Teacher Clarity
Teacher clarity is understanding what students need to learn and identifying how they will know that they learned it. It requires analyzing standards and planning meaningful instruction and assessments.

4️⃣Classroom Discussion
Classroom discussion involves much more than a teacher asking a class a question. It can be structured and involve students using academic language and specific language frames to have a discussion with their peers.

5️⃣Formative Assessment
Formative assessment is an assessment for learning used to monitor each student’s learning. It informs the student of his/ her progress in becoming proficient, and it also informs the teacher about the effectiveness of instruction and where to go next in the instructional process.

One of my favorite activities to teach in March is

One of my favorite activities to teach in March is the idiom “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.”

We read, discuss, write, and create an art project to help students understand both the idiom and the changing seasons.

Lesson Idea:
📚Read & Discuss - In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb by Marion Dane Bauer is a great read-aloud with beautiful illustrations. If you don’t have a copy, there are read-aloud versions on YouTube.

📊Chart It - As we read, we record students’ thoughts on chart paper, dividing it into two sections: Lion and Lamb. We discuss how these characteristics represent the transition from winter to spring.

✂️Sort It - Students cut and sort seasonal phrases into the Lion (Winter) and Lamb (Spring) categories.

✍🏻Write It - Using the word sort and anchor chart, students
write a Diamante poem comparing winter and spring.

📝Create It - Students make a lion and lamb craft to display their work. These projects are perfect for hanging around the classroom.

For upper elementary teachers, this is a great opportunity to pair with a primary buddy class. Older students can help younger ones with the sorting, writing, and crafting activities.

Teaching students what success looks like is one thing, but showing them? That’s where the magic happens. ✨

Target responses are one of the most powerful ways to make success criteria visible in writing. When students can actually see what a level 4, 3, 2, or 1 response looks like, they understand exactly where they are and what they need to do to grow.

Instead of guessing what “good writing” means, they can identify the qualities of strong writing, organization, evidence, precision, and use those models to self-assess and set goals.

It’s not just about assessing; it’s about clarity. Target responses give students a clear path forward and the confidence to get there.

We have to stop treating “I do, We do, You do” lik

We have to stop treating “I do, We do, You do” like it’s just a routine to check off.

It’s cognitive load management.

It’s clarity.

It’s confidence-building.

When students struggle during independent work, it’s not always effort. Sometimes we just moved to “You do” too quickly.

The “I do” makes your thinking visible.

The “We do” protects accuracy.

The “You do” should feel earned, not forced.

Especially this time of year, when we’re tempted to think, “They should know this by now,” it might be time to revisit guided practice instead of adding more independent work.

Clarity before independence. Always.

Use self assessment tickets when you’re teaching new skills. They can be used for any content area. ❤️

State the learning goal at the beginning of your lesson and ask students to rate their level of understanding before you start the lesson.

Teach your lesson and then at the end, restate your learning goal and ask students to self assess their understanding. 🥰

Students should complete an independent practice that matches the learning goal and then staple their ticket to their work.

When I teach a novel, I also incorporate picture b

When I teach a novel, I also incorporate picture books that have a similar theme. With my favorite novel, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, I use the stories Bun Bun Button and The Teddy Bear because they all have a similar theme and/or story details. 📚

This is an example of how I taught this particular unit with my third graders. 👏🏻. We were working on the compare/contrast language function and using those signal words within our writing. I modeled compare/contrast writing by comparing and contrasting the novel with one of the picture books. After I taught the lessons and modeled the writing for my students, I had my students compare/contrast the other picture book with the novel. ❤️

I used a target response, language frames to give students scaffolds when independently writing, and a four square graphic organizer. 👩🏻‍🏫

My students’ writing hit the target and then they were better prepared to continue writing using this purpose and language function. 🎯
