Create a school-wide kindness tree!💕🌳

To help create this school-wide board, every teacher in our school had their students write about different ways they could show kindness, using sentence frames that we (the school leadership team) provided to them.

The students wrote their sentence on hearts.
We used the hearts to create this giant kindness tree display at the front of our school.

Some teachers did this daily with their students and others did it weekly. Every time a class was finished writing on the hearts, we’d add them to the tree. It was a great display at our school’s entrance and we kept it there until the end of the school year. again.

Make this simple art project with your students fo

Make this simple art project with your students for Valentine’s Day!❤️

Use a 12x12 piece of construction paper.

Using a sharpie, draw five lines going down and five lines going across. Make sure they don’t intersect.

Then draw a heart in the center.

Use warm colors to color the heart and cool colors to color the background.

Have students try to alternate the color pattern. I like using oil pastels for this project, but you can use crayons, markers, or colored pencils.

This activity was such a meaningful and creative way to start the new year with my students. ❤️

Instead of the usual goal-writing, we did something inspired by Martin’s Big Words. After reading the book and learning about Dr. King’s powerful message of using words, not fists, to create change, I invited my students to choose their own “BIG word” to guide them through the year.

Here’s how it worked:
We brainstormed what BIG words mean, made an anchor chart, and each student picked a word that resonated with them. They designed their word on a special template paired with the year, and then we turned them into magical agamographs!

4️⃣ things to do with your students when you return from winter break:

1. Review and reteach behavior expectations.
Over long holiday breaks our students may forget the behavior expectations we’ve created for our classroom. But it’s easy and so important to remind them! I would always spend the first day back from breaks reviewing behavior expectations. If needed, I also took students into different areas of the school to review expectations in the exact locations. You can always create new expectations too! They don’t always have to be created at the beginning of the school year. Just make sure they’re clear and concise!

2. Set new academic and/or behavior goals.
Returning back to school from holiday breaks is a great time to set goals! I used my SMART Goal templates and guided my students to make new goals after coming back from a break.
Creating SMART Goals helped my students take ownership of their learning and solidify that it was a fresh start.

3. Explicitly teach kindness and empathy.
Students need explicit teaching about what it means to be kind, understand perspectives, and have empathy. While reviewing expectations and setting goals when you come back from breaks, also weave in explicit lessons about empathy, compassion for others, and the power of kindness.

4. Take the time to do daily check-ins with your students.
You can start a daily check-in system with your students when you come back from breaks. Getting students back into the routines of school can sometimes be challenging after they’ve spent some time away. Daily check-ins can help you understand how your students are feeling and find out what support they might need.

Greatest idea ever, especially coming back from winter break!⌛️

Time your students while they transition from task to task or during small group transitions. Then make them beat that time.
Tell them they’ve set the standard for all future transition times!
