Building your classroom community is so important! Positivity, smiles, and fun are the ingredients to getting your classroom community started.
One thing I have noticed is that it’s important to make your students aware of their effect on classroom community. Each student is a stakeholder in a classroom community’s success.
That’s why it’s so important that students know the classroom is not only your clasroom, it’s their classroom.
Here are THREE reasons why every teacher should say OUR classroom:
1. Students will collaborate.
Students will be more willing to collaborate and work with one another more fluidly when they know they are part of a team. Saying “our” classroom enforces the sense of collaboration.
2. Students take ownership.
When students feel like they’re a part of something, they’ll tend to try their best when in a situation. When students feel the classroom is also theirs, they’ll do more to help, listen, and be engaged. Say things like “keep OUR classroom clean” or “take care of the books in OUR classroom library.”
3. Students will be proud.
Students will walk around the campus proudly knowing that it isn’t just “Mr. or Mrs. Classroom.” They’ll be proud to say, “In our classroom, we …” Students will enjoy their time with you and make everyone’s school year that much more enjoyable.
