especially the volunteers and room moms. To honor my students and volunteers, I
created these little thank you gifts. They’re simple, inexpensive, and
thoughtful. J

I made both of these projects with 2nd graders to 5th graders.😍

We read informational text about both presidents, identified important details, wrote them out on the stars, and created the double sided craft.

They made a great hanging display!

Something I did to accompany the Wrinkled Heart id

Something I did to accompany the Wrinkled Heart idea was to use it with a story I wrote called “Troy’s Bad Day.”

Here’s how I taught it: 👇🏻

I read the story to my students as they sat on our reading carpet and listened. For the first read aloud, I asked students to listen and try to identify the problems the main character, Troy, was having.

After reading it, I asked for volunteers to share their ideas and I wrote them on an anchor chart.

I read the story a second time, and this time, I told my students that we would pause and fold a piece of the paper heart every time something negative happened to Troy.

I modeled it first and thought out loud as I folded the heart. My students soon caught on and raised their hand every time they heard a problem and told me we needed to fold the heart.

At the end of the story, students saw the heart was small and folded. We talked about what that meant for Troy. Again, I wrote students’ ideas on the anchor chart.

We slowly unfolded the heart and I asked students what they noticed about it. We talked about the folds and what it symbolizes for someone’s actual feelings. We talked about the idea that you can really leave a negative impression on someone’s heart with your unkind words and actions.

We talked about the actions of the other characters and how it contributed to Troy’s wrinkled heart.

We read the story a third time, and this time we came up with ideas on what the other characters and Troy could have done to make things better. I also wrote their ideas on the chart.

When we were done, each student got a smaller paper heart and they wrote one thing they could do to make a positive impact in someone’s life.

This is a great February activity that can help you build a positive classroom culture.

Create a school-wide kindness tree! 🌳 😍💕

Create a school-wide kindness tree! 🌳 😍💕

To help create this school-wide board, every teacher in our school had their students write about different ways they could show kindness, using sentence frames that we (the school leadership team) provided to them.

The students wrote their sentence on hearts.

We used the hearts to create this giant kindness tree display at the front of our school.😍

Some teachers did this daily with their students and others did it weekly. Every time a class was finished writing on the hearts, we’d add them to the tree. It was a great display at our school’s entrance and we kept it there until the end of the school year.👏🏻

Make this simple art project with your students fo

Make this simple art project with your students for Valentine’s Day!❤️

Use a 12x12 piece of construction paper.

Using a sharpie, draw five lines going down and five lines going across. Make sure they don’t intersect.

Then draw a heart in the center.

Use warm colors to color the heart and cool colors to color the background.

Have students try to alternate the color pattern. I like using oil pastels for this project, but you can use crayons, markers, or colored pencils.

Formative assessment is about identifying and responding to students’ needs. When implemented effectively, there are so many benefits. 🤩 Check out these 5:

1️⃣. Clear expectations for Student Performance:
By implementing formative assessment regularly in your classroom, students have clear objectives, and teachers can intervene “in-the-moment” to clear up confusion and redirect student learning.

2️⃣. Frequent Opportunities for Feedback:
After setting clear expectations, the formative assessment process allows teachers to provide students with frequent, specific and targeted feedback. This can be done throughout the modeling and guided practice areas of the lesson while teachers are implementing “in-the-moment” formative assessment strategies.

3️⃣. Increases Student Engagement:
By teaching students how to self-monitor (a key component of formative assessment), they can become self-regulated, independent, and autonomous in reviewing and assessing their work. Throughout the formative assessment process, students are called on to set their own learning goals and measure their progress; this directly impacts levels of student motivation and increases their agency in their learning.

4️⃣. More Effective Differentiation and Scaffolding:
The formative assessment process helps teachers better understand student needs. With this understanding, they can increase rigor and differentiate up or determine gaps and scaffold accordingly, which leads to more personalized learning opportunities.

5️⃣. Data-Driven Instruction:
With formative assessment and multiple data points, teachers can better incorporate data in their decisions on how to re-teach, skip, enhance, and overall adjust their instruction.
