Word Problems

April 26, 2012 in Uncategorized

Solving word problems can be very tricky! It’s important to give students step to solve problems. In our classroom we use a simple strategy titled, “Give Me Five!” It’s modeled after some other word problem solving strategies, but I tailored it to fit our classroom and students. Here’s a free download of the “Give Me Five” process, along with three multiplication word problems geared for second or third grade. After teaching the lesson on “Give Me Five,” I broke students into pairs and had them solve problems together. Then they created a mini poster with the five steps to solve word problems! They also created their own word problems on the reverse side of the poster. Students traded their posters with other pairs and tried solving each other’s word problems. Students had fun challenging each other!
